The White Domes are located on Canaan Mountain. The trailhead to Squirrel Creek is northeast of the Big Plain and north of the village of Hildale, east of Hurricane, Utah.

Drive from Hurricane onto 59, continuing through beautiful Apple Valley and the Big Plain to Hildale. Continue to the northeast end of Hidale to Water Canyon Road. This dirt road, it follows Short Creek, takes you 1.08 miles to the parking area and trailhead . This dirt road has deep ruts, but they can be easily negotiated with smart route selection. I still recommend a high clearance vehicle.

At the Squirrel Creek trailhead, which is to the right of Water Canyon Road, where Water Canyon nearly ends before it joins Short Creek, descend into the mighty Wash.

You will need a permit for this hike, which is highly sought after and rare. Go to the websites of the BLM, there you can enter online and maybe get lucky. The procedures are described on the net.

West of Page, Arizona, head over Glen Canyon Dam toward Kanab, Utah, on US 89, which you stay on for about 36 miles. After it gets mountainous (The Cockscomb) and 89 loops to the right, the unpaved House Rock Valley Road exits to the left. It's about 10.8 miles to parking next to the road, which is also the trailhead.

Shoulder your backpack and off you go! Cross-country you torture yourself to the east up the first slope, to then come over a wide plain to the Cliffs. The Notch, a notch in the cliffs, is your first stopover.

Coyote Gulch is located in Glen Canyon National Recreation Area, north of Fortymile Ridge in Utah.

From Escalante, Utah, drive approximately 5 miles east (Boulder) and turn onto the unpaved Hole-in-the-Rock Road (HITRR), Road number 200. Follow HITRR 36 miles to Fortymile Ridge Road, Road Number 270, and turn left here (see above for GPS coordinates). You must have a 4WD from this point on at the latest. After another 4.3 miles, the water tanks are on the upper left. There is a road bend to the right, you continue on the road. It gets very, very sandy, but with a lot of momentum you will reach the parking lot and trailhead after a total of 6.84 miles from the turnoff.

40 minutes it goes over sand and rocks, here the trail is well marked with cairns, to the Crack-in-the-Wall. Who is not exactly suffering from obesity, which comes down easily. Took the backpack in hand and descended sideways. No problems, but nothing for contemporaries who have claustrophobia.

Angel Arch [Salt Creek - Canyonlands National Park]

Angel Arch [Salt Creek - Canyonlands National Park]

Angel Arch is located above Salt Creek in Canyonlands National Park, Needles District, 80 miles south of Moab, Utah. You will need a permit to hike.

You drive from Moab in southern direction on Highway 191 until you turn right after about 40 miles into Highway 211 (Attention: not to be confused with the Needles Overlook, which leaves to the right before). After a total of 71 miles you are in Canyonlands NP and after 74 miles at the Visitor Center, where you get your permit including a combination of numbers for the gate at the Backpacker Office. Here you set your mileage counter to 0.

After 0.8 miles, turn left off 211 before Squaw Butte. After 1.4 miles from the Visitor Center, turn left again onto the unpaved road toward Salt Creek. After 2.2 miles, turn right onto the Salt Creek Jeep Trail and after 2.6 miles you will be in front of the gate into Salt Creek. You got the combination with the permit. I hope it is correct; unfortunately we have experienced it differently.

The further stretch to Peekaboo Camp goes 3.4 miles partly through the riverbed (water if necessary) and over sandy tracks. There is only one turnoff to the left to Horse Canyon, - but you keep to the right and stay in the riverbed. After about 2 hours of travel from Moab, without "Permitgedöns", you park your car at the trailhead, the Peekaboo Camp.

When you have put on your hiking shoes, look up the wall that is right next to the camp, which is actually nothing more than a parking lot. Here you can already see the Peekaboo Window, the first highlight.

Rainbow Rock Arch [Payette National Forest]

Rainbow Rock Arch [Payette National Forest]

The unique Rainbow Rock Arch is located east of McCall, west of Yellow Pine, Idaho.

In advance, the strong recommendation that you inquire beforehand about road conditions, because you are in the high mountains and we encountered road workers on the unpaved road from McCall on June 20. The roadway was being cleared of snow and crossing trees just that day and we were lucky to get to the trailhead "just in time".

Drive from McCall on the northern edge of town between Payette Lake and Little Payette Lake onto Lick Creek Road. This road becomes unpaved after Little Payette Lake. Assuming the road is snow free, it is generally very well maintained, so in optimum condition a passenger car would be possible. However, I recommend a high clearance car.

Follow the road north over Leek Creek Summit, here you reach the highest point at about 7,000 feet, down into Lick Creek. It now heads east toward Yellow Pine. Along the Secesh River and the Salmon River you will reach the Deadman Campground after about 40.5 miles, which is a parking lot at the same time the trailhead. You have been on the road by car for just under two hours.

The trail starts across from the parking lot and winds up Deadman Bar, which they then bypass to the left to follow the trail in Deadman Creek to the northeast. Steadily it goes uphill ...

Red Top to Yellow Rock [Cottonwood Canyon]

Red Top to Yellow Rock [Cottonwood Canyon]

Red Top, Yellow Valley, and Yellow Rock are located above Cottonwood Creek and the Paria River on Cottonwood Canyon Road in Utah, northwest of Page, Arizona.

West of Page, Arizona, drive over Glen Canyon Dam toward Kanab, Utah, on US 89, staying on it until between Mileposts 17 and 18, where you turn right onto the unpaved Cottonwood Canyon Road. With any car, assuming dry conditions, you can make the further 11.8 miles, after which you turn left onto the dirt road and park your car after a good 100 yards, on the banks of the Paria River, so to speak.

For a while you walk northwest along the riverbed, crossing the Paria River again and again. This is usually not a big problem, because the water is usually only ankle deep. After about 25 minutes you have reached the Box Trail, it goes to the right and it goes up.

Die Trailheads liegen also 6 Meilen voneinander entfernt.

Haleakala, which translates to House of the Sun, or East Maui Vulcano, a shield volcano, is located southeast of Kahului, on the eastern side of the island of Maui, Hawaii.

From Kahului, take Highway 36 (Hana Road) and at the airport turn onto Highway 37, called Haleakala Highway. Always stay on this highway until you reach the trailheads in Haleakala National Park. From the turnoff onto Haleakala Highway in Kahului to the Halemau'u trailhead is 28.3 miles. From this turnoff to the Sliding Sands trailhead at the Visitor Center is 34.3 miles. So the trailheads are 6 miles apart.

You can walk both trails separately, i.e. start from one trailhead and return there, or in conjunction. But for this you need two cars, which you park at the trailheads respectively.

We started at the top of the Sliding Sands Trail and hiked down to the Halemau'u Trailhead. The other way around is also possible, of course, but I recommend this variant (in total downhill), - it is described below!

The huge Haleakala Crater, into which the Sliding Sands Trail leads, spreads out beneath your feet. A tremendous scenery is illuminated in the hopefully early morning sun. The sunrise hungry have already left the mountain and you are full of anticipation for this hike. A mile you are on the way, the crater walls are already rising notably to the left and right.
